Plane, a Paper Shredder

Plane

Plane is an alternative take on the office or home shredder. Departing from the standard waste bin, Plane offers a detachable sliding waste bag to free the user of lifting a heavy component, and a simple open to turn on interface. The lid acting as an on off switch also doubles as an arm which helps guide the paper into the shredder to prevent the pages from folding over themselves, which reduces the odds of the shredder clogging

Inspiration

Research
In order to get a good idea of what exactly the problems with shredders were I had to get people to shred papers naturally so the data wouldn't be compromised. To do so, I disguised this experiment as a fine arts project and offered pizza for anyone who participated.

The participants then revealed the problems with the precedent shredder design:
1. Its difficult to turn the shredder on and off.
2. The lid that houses the (heavy) shredding mechanism has to be lifted off to empty the shredder bin.
3. Paper is difficult to feed into the shredder.
4. The shredder gets jammed because if the pages aren't fed it properly, they fold over themselves to make for double the amount of paper initially shred.
